might it be worth seeing if you can organise trips with some of the dogs to schools to chat about what you do and why and introduce some of these " weapon dogs " to future purchasers to try and stop the prejudice with the next generation before it starts?
or see if you can get on school lists for excursions so they can come see how the kennels are run, would think it would come under the citizenship curriculum, may even be able to ask for a donation of a couple of pound per child.
And you could send them home with leaflets about the kennels or sponsoring a dog/kennel.
just a thought.

The only problem with that, is health and safety. They would be worried if one of the dogs suddenly turned on the kids, its an insurance nightmare. I do believe that the r.s.p.c.a go into schools and give talks about animals. Our other problem, is finding the time to do it, as all our time is needed here at the rescue.

And also as its going in schools you would have the mine field of whether CRB check are needed for anyone going in. Nightmare.

About time parents educated their kids on being kind to animals I think, as alot of parents dont have respect for animals themselves these days and drag their own poor kids up so they just follow by example and have no respect for animals - I speak from experience after giving 2 young lads 8 - 10 year olds a bollocking for dragging a puppy by its neck on its lead across a road cause it didn't want to walk prob cause it was too tired poor thing was even on its side at one stage - I told them I was an "Animal protection officer" and I would arrest them if they ever did it again , they looked worried I can tell you! as I know where the little gits live so told them I would be checking on them!

forgot about the crb checks but they are not really much hassle had mine done very quickly when i helped out at my kids nursery school.
trouble with adults is they get stuck in there ways/thinking, still feel children are the best people to change for the future. But can see this may be a hassle.
well as post says was just a thought lol.

Good on you dodledeele...I agree that children today don't have the common sense or education about animals to grow up into resposible pet owners.
When I was a child I grew up on a small holding with ducks, geese, chickens, 3 ponies, a donkey...and countless dogs and adopted ferral cats!
Question: Has owning a pet almost become disposable in value?
Pets should not be given a home if its 'just a whim' and you aren't perpared to put the work in to training 'em and educate your self on how to take care of them!
Lisah/Elaine:To get the message to children would we be able to approach organisations like Scouts, St John's Ambulance etc and see if we could take the dogs to them? Like a mini roadshow drop ins across the Retford to Ollerton area?

This would be great if we had the time to look into this. Elaine and Darren work 24/7 as the phone keeps going even after the kennels are closed. We are struggling for volunteers now and we have more dogs than ever. We are desperate for more helpers and the kennel dogs welfare is the most important thing. There was 3 of us on yesterday with Elaine and we just struggled to find the time to get everything done and I don't think one of us had time to walk a dog. So if anyone knows anyone that would like to help out any day of the week either cleaning walking dogs or fundraising an hour even if it is justplease let us know. I am 6 and a half months pregnant now so Elaine will be losing a volunteer shortly and we are struggling as it is.

Popped into Babworth today to see Elaine and show her Bear. We've both volunteered for the 'Table Top' sale on 28th Nov'09.
My mum (who's the grand old age of 77) is now under strick instructions not to throw her newspaper's in the recycling bin...and has bric-a-brac a plenty to donate.
My cousin is in the Scout's organisation and I will sound him out on the 'road show' idea...could possibly be a no go but will ask. I used to be a Badger leader (junior group) in the St John's Ambulance and if the scout thing looks promising then will move in that direct maybe.

wish i lived closer (or could drive lol ) as i'd be more than happy to clean kennels and walk the dogs.
can we do a wish list of things needed and see if we can work through it maybe? like bedding, maybe people donating unused vet medicines/ointment the vet could use to cut costs, bric a brac, even a new kennel block lol. whatever is needed see if we can get a wish list going and what we can do about it?
