If I won the lottery I would open my own animal sanctuary/refuge, I suppose we all would on here,
sadly people like us with good intentions never seem to win.

Whats worst, look how many of them are Staffy's or Staffy crosses, and the A##h#### still keep breeding them. Our rescue is faced with this on a daily basis, asking if we can take them in as they are going to be pts. It is so very frustrating when you want to help, but know you have to say no, as you just do not have the space. All you can do, is try and educate people into having their dogs neuterd, to stop the mass amount of dogs pts everyday in pounds all across the country. NEUTER, NEUTER, NEUTER.

That's so sad. If I won the lottery I think i'd be right there with you in setting up a rescue so that I could offer as many as possible spaces to give them a shot at finding a forever home I'm a member of another forum which has volunteers has a section with a plea for rescue spaces and it makes me cry almost every time I go on there and read about some of the poundies that are very likely going to be PTS. Its devastating that people see the obvious overcrowing and overbreeding (especially of particular breeds like staffies) yet continue to do so in the hopes that they'll earn a quick amount of money. It's so upsetting aswell that all the lovely dogs in rescues are being overlooked because they're too old or what have you

How many times do we get calls for (insert small cute breed e.g. westie, shih tsu, king charles) MUST be a puppy MUST be housetrained MUST be good with kids/cats PREFERABLY WITH PAPERS and probably needs to shit solid gold poo's O.K. so we probably on the odd occasion do get small cute pedigree breeds in at the rescue but they are usually older and sometimes with some defect or behavioural problem, it is very rare that we have a PERFECT dog that needs absolutely no work to get it to that stage (Waits for the screams from the people who have had one!) Much as we love Sandy she has chewed alsorts of stuff up in the house unless we locked her in the kitchen when we went out for a year after we got her and destroyed the garden even though she was 18 months old when we got her and well out of the *chewing stage* her lead work was minimal BUT her recall was excellent . The easiest dogs we have had were the old farts brigade who didnt destroy anything but again Zoe the boxer at 6 years old would steal anything within snout height (even if she had to climb on something to make it the right height) Jack the old boxer was never any trouble nor is Wolfie (except he is doubly incontinent) It is also ridiculous the amount of people who want to surrender really old dogs to rescue, regular phone calls are for terriers of 14 or older years and G.S.D.'s of 10 or 11 years a Sheps life expectancy is 10 - 12 years and the trauma and stress caused by being bundled into kennels and the stress involved while they are resident there is terrible (they are not good kennel dogs at the best of times) but the owners get arsey when I suggest that it would be kinder to the dog to have it P.T.S. - Im sorry if it shocks you but that is MY view that in some cases it is the better option for the do than to make the dogs last few months miserable as has been mentioned, no-one is going to take on and old dog knowing that they will just have time to get a bond with the dog only to have to make the decision in a few short months to have it destroyed and suffer the ensuing heartbreak - and I do know what I'm talking about there having had 3 oldies in the past 2 years and it's getting to that time in Wolfie's life that we are going to go through it again fairly soon! Not sure how I got onto my soap-box about oldies when I was starting on the perfect rescue dog but hey-ho - posting it (drunk) anyway

mark I'm deffo with you on that, I've applied to do voluntary dog walking/bathing/caring etc to help elderly and disabled people keep their muchloved pets at home with them for as long as possible. For most of them they are more like best friends than pets and I believe they are therapy to them. I'm still waiting to hear weather I'm successful but I have a good chance as I am also qualified to work with vulnerable adults. a win win situation for both dog and owner. When I worked in a kennels lots of oldies were in their coz their owners couldn't care for them - I know it's not quite the same thing that you were meaning Mark, as some owners hand them in coz they don't want to pay the oldies vet bills at the end

Considering you were drunk Mark, your post was very good!! It's about time people realised there is no "perfect " dog, and you only get out what you put in! Makes me sick those looking for a specific requirement, dogs are not like cars you can't just get one that ticks all the boxs! They are probably better off getting a robotic one, if they have all those set requirements! And as for handing over your old one!!! Don't even get me started!!! HOW. After all the years together could you even THINK of putting them in a rescue??? If you didn't want them do you really think someone else would take it on with all it's ailments of old age??? Get real!! Dogs (and other pets) are for LIFE not just a whim that you can have one day and then disregard later!!! And if others thought the same, rescues like Babworth wouldn't be full to the brim!. (gets down off of soap box)

on the subject of the 'perfect' dog - I agree there isn't such a thing (although my dogs are perfect in my eyes, with warts an all lol) I know an older couple who ONLY want an ex lab guide dog that has been trained already, and nothing else will do ! hmmmmm - be waiting a long time then Iv'e got friends who have had animals and got rid of them before giving them any time to settle in, bloody annoys me and I can't understand why they get them in the first place ?? and yes I do have my say about what I think of THAT (doesnt make me popular but I don't care! ;D)
